About Literature & Books Quizzes

Literature & Books explores the written word in depth: the great novels and their authors, the plays of Shakespeare, poetry and its forms, the books people first meet as children, science fiction and fantasy, crime and mystery writing, and the prizes, records and quirks of the book world. Each quiz holds eighty questions in three packs, and every question describes a work, a writer, a character, a form or a fact and asks you to name it from four choices, then explains what it is and the story around it.

The wrong options are always the same kind of thing as the answer, a novel against novels, a poet against poets, a prize against prizes, so the game rewards genuine recognition rather than a lucky guess. Nothing assumes a literature degree: each quiz explains its terms and fills in the plot or the background as it goes, so a keen reader can play it as readily as a scholar.

Where a picture is used it is a deliberately neutral one, a shelf of old books, a reading room, a quill and inkwell, an old typewriter, chosen so that it fits every one of the four options equally and cannot give the answer away, because a portrait or a book cover almost always would. Facts, dates, plot details and the spellings of names have been checked against reference sources, and the coverage aims to be genuinely worldwide, spanning several centuries and many countries and languages rather than treating one nation's literature as the default.
