Sport is one of the few things the whole world watches together, and this SuperCategory is a tour of it, one game or event at a time. Because American football and basketball already have their own sections on the site, this one covers everything else: the Olympics, summer and winter; the World Cup of football; cricket; tennis; motor racing; boxing and the combat sports; and the great games of the mind, from chess to bridge. Each quiz describes an athlete, a contest, a rule, a venue or a moment and asks you to name it, then fills in the history, the numbers and the story behind it. The aim is the good stuff, accurately told: the famous champions and the famous upsets, the origins of the rules, the records that stood for decades, and the scandals and boycotts that are part of the history too. Everything has been checked against reliable sources, and the wording is kept plain enough to follow whether or not you watched the event.

Each quiz runs to eighty questions in three packs, and the answer is always a single name chosen from four, so nothing turns on spelling or on knowing a full rulebook. The mix is deliberately broad within each subject: the household names and the forgotten pioneers, the men's game and the women's, the events everyone follows and the ones that only surface once every four years, and the sport off the field as well as on it, the governing bodies, the money, the cheating and the politics.
