The National Basketball Association is the world's premier professional basketball league, and its history is a chain of dynasties. It began in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America, merged with the rival National Basketball League in 1949 to take its current name, and absorbed four teams from the ABA in 1976, bringing in the three-point line and a faster, flashier style.
The story of the NBA is largely the story of a few franchises. The Minneapolis Lakers and George Mikan ruled the early 1950s. The Boston Celtics then won 11 championships in 13 years under Red Auerbach and Bill Russell, including eight in a row, a streak no North American major-league team has approached. The 1980s belonged to the Bird-versus-Magic rivalry of the Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers, whose "Showtime" fast break defined an era. Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls won six titles in the 1990s in two three-peats and never lost a Finals. The 2000s saw the San Antonio Spurs win five titles in 16 quiet, fundamental years under Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan, while the Lakers added a Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant three-peat. The 2010s brought LeBron James's traveling super-teams and the Golden State Warriors' shooting revolution, and the decade closed with the Toronto Raptors becoming the first champion from outside the United States.
Individual greatness runs alongside the team history: Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's all-time scoring record, later passed by LeBron James, Russell's rings, Jordan's scoring titles, Stephen Curry rewriting the record book from behind the arc.
