About Mughal Empire: Polities, Economy & Art

This quiz is meant for students preparing for the IAS examination and other competitive tests, and for anyone who wants a firm grasp of the Mughal Empire from Babur to Bahadur Shah Zafar. It covers the political history of the dynasty -- Babur and the battles of Panipat, Khanwa and Ghaghra; Humayun and the Sur interregnum of Sher Shah; Akbar's conquests and religious policy; Jahangir and Nur Jahan; Shah Jahan and the war of succession; Aurangzeb, the re-imposition of the jizya and the Deccan wars; and the decline, Nadir Shah's invasion and the end of the line. It then deals with government and the state: the emperor and the four great ministers, the mansabdari system with its zat and sawar, the jagir and watan jagir, the provinces and districts, and the land-revenue systems of Todar Mal. It covers the economy -- agriculture and new crops, the zamindars, textiles and indigo, the silver inflow, the ports and towns, and the coming of the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French companies.
