About Constitutional Bodies (CAG, Election Commission, UPSC)

This quiz is meant for students preparing for the IAS examination and other competitive tests, and for anyone who wants to understand the watchdog bodies of Indian democracy. It deals with the constitutional bodies that keep the government honest and the system fair: the Comptroller and Auditor-General, who guards the public purse; the Election Commission, which runs our elections; and the Union Public Service Commission, which selects our civil servants. The last part also covers the other constitutional bodies -- the Finance Commission, the commissions for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes, the Special Officer for Linguistic Minorities, the Attorney-General, the Advocate-General and the GST Council. When complete it will have one hundred and twenty carefully checked questions, arranged in five packs of twenty-four.

Every question has four options, and the correct option can be in any position. After each question there is a detailed explanation of more than five lines, in simple Indian English that a school student can follow. The explanation gives the relevant Article of the Constitution, the important numbers such as the six-year term, the age of sixty-five, and the size of the Election Commission, and the points that examiners like to test, such as the difference between a constitutional body and a statutory one.

The questions cover the CAG under Articles 148 to 151, his appointment, removal, independence, duties and audit reports, and his link with the Public Accounts Committee; the Election Commission under Article 324, its composition, tenure, powers, the Model Code of Conduct, electronic voting machines and the registration of parties; the Union Public Service Commission under Articles 315 to 323, its composition, functions and limitations, and the State Public Service Commissions; and the working of the other constitutional bodies.
