About Historical Background & Making of the Constitution

India's Constitution did not appear all of a sudden. It grew slowly, step by step, over almost two hundred years. It all started when the British Parliament passed the Regulating Act in 1773. This was the first law made to control the East India Company. After this, many more laws came one by one, like Pitt's India Act, and the Charter Acts. Each new law added a small brick to the big building that we now call the Government of India.

A very important change came in 1858. After the big revolt of 1857, the British Crown took direct control of India from the Company. This started the period we call British Raj. After this, laws like the Indian Councils Acts and the Government of India Acts of 1919 and 1935 slowly gave a few more powers to Indians. The Government of India Act of 1935 is very special. It is often called the true "blueprint" of our Constitution, because many of its ideas and structures were later copied directly into it.

The real work of making our own Constitution started after the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946. This plan suggested that Indians should form their own Constituent Assembly. This Assembly first met on December 9, 1946, even before India became fully independent. Members of this Assembly worked with great care and patience. They discussed, argued, and debated every single part of the new Constitution.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar played the biggest role in this whole process. He was made Chairman of the Drafting Committee, the group that wrote the actual words of the Constitution. Because of his hard work, he is called the Father of the Indian Constitution. After almost three years of work, the Constituent Assembly finally adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949. It came into full force a little later, on January 26, 1950, and India became a complete Republic.
