A team of 8 men can complete the entire wall working alone in 15 days, while a separate team of 12 women can complete the very same wall working alone in 20 days. Both figures describe the same fixed amount of work, so the total work can be measured in "man-days" from the men's figures, or "woman-days" from the women's figures.

The site supervisor wants to understand exactly how much of the wall a single man or a single woman completes per day, and to work out how long various mixed teams of men and women, working together, would take to complete the same wall, along with how much of the wall gets finished under different combinations and durations.
