About India: Physiographic Divisions & Rock Systems

This quiz is meant for students preparing for the IAS examination and other competitive tests, and for anyone who wants a wide-ranging survey of India's physiographic divisions and rock systems. It begins with the Himalayas -- their formation, the three parallel ranges of Himadri, Himachal and Shiwalik, the regional divisions from Punjab to Assam, the syntaxial bends, the Karakoram and Trans-Himalaya, and major peaks and passes. It then covers the Northern Plains -- their formation as a foredeep, the Bhabar, Terai, Bhangar and Khadar belts, the Punjab, Ganga and Brahmaputra plains, and features such as doabs and the Sundarbans delta. A third section covers the Peninsular Plateau -- its Gondwana origin, the Deccan Traps and black soil, the Central Highlands, the Aravalli, Vindhya and Satpura ranges, the Western and Eastern Ghats, and the Chotanagpur and Meghalaya plateaus. A fourth section covers India's coastal plains and islands -- the Konkan, Malabar, Coromandel and Northern Circars coasts, the Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands, and major lagoons and gulfs.
