About Empires & Dynasties

An empire is a state that rules over many peoples, usually acquired by conquest and held by a mix of force, administration and prestige. A dynasty is a family that keeps a throne in its own hands across generations. This quiz is about both: how empires are built and by whom, how ruling houses rise, marry, fight and fail, and what is left when they go. It picks up roughly where the ancient world ends, with Rome and the Achaemenids and Han China already covered elsewhere, and runs through the medieval and early-modern centuries to the last emperors of the 20th.

The big names are here: the Mongols under Genghis Khan and his heirs, the Ottomans from a frontier warband to 'the sick man of Europe', the Mughals from Babur to Aurangzeb, the Habsburgs marrying their way across a continent, the Romanovs, the Ming and the Qing, Napoleon, the British Empire at its largest. So are the ones that get less space in a Western classroom: Mali and Songhai and Ghana in the Sahel, the Khmer at Angkor, Srivijaya and Majapahit in the islands, the Chola fleets, the Zulu and the Asante, the horse empire of the Comanche, the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Empires look solid on a map and are anything but. The quiz keeps returning to how they actually work and come apart: succession crises and fratricide, overreach into one war too many, the cost of standing armies and courts, plague and climate shocks, the moment a subject people or a rival technology tips the balance. Where a conquest rests on local allies, disease or luck as much as on the conqueror, the answer says so.

It also follows the machinery that lets a family hold a throne: the slave-soldier corps, from the Janissaries to the Mamluks, that could guard a dynasty or unmake it; marriage as a weapon of state; the child on the throne with a mother, a eunuch or a chief minister ruling in his name; the elective crown that a single house captures and keeps; and the founding legend, a stool lowered from the sky, a descent from Solomon, a promise from a god, that turns raw power into legitimacy. The same devices turn up on every continent.

Each question describes an empire, a ruling house, a founder or a turning-point battle without naming it, and offers four choices. The explanation then gives the dates, the extent, the key figures, how it ended, and why the wrong answers are tempting. Where a freely licensed photograph of a battlefield, a landscape or a monument sets the scene without simply being the answer, it appears with the question; otherwise the question is text only.
