About NFL Teams

The NFL is 32 franchises split evenly into two conferences, the American and the National, each carved into four divisions of four. Every team plays 17 regular-season games from September into January, and the map runs from Boston to Los Angeles and from Miami to Seattle, taking in every large American market and a few small ones that have held on against the odds.

Geography and history are written into the names. Some are literal: the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys for the frontier West, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers for the mills and meatpacking plants that once defined those towns, the San Francisco 49ers for the prospectors of the 1849 gold rush. Some are borrowed: the Baltimore Ravens from an Edgar Allan Poe poem, chosen by fan vote after the city lost the Colts to Indianapolis in a fleet of moving vans in 1984. A few have changed entirely. The Washington franchise carried a name widely condemned as a slur for almost 90 years before dropping it in 2020, playing two seasons simply as the Football Team before becoming the Commanders.

Ownership tells its own story. Most clubs belong to a single wealthy family, some for generations: the Rooneys have run Pittsburgh since 1933, the Maras have held a piece of the New York Giants since 1925. The Green Bay Packers are the exception, and a deliberate one, a publicly owned non-profit with more than half a million shareholders, based in a city of about 100,000, structurally impossible to sell or move. It is why the smallest market in American major-league sport also owns the most championships.

The look of the game is franchise identity too. The Los Angeles Rams painted the first helmet logo in 1948, a set of curling horns applied by hand by one of their own players. The Pittsburgh Steelers wear their emblem on only one side of the helmet, the result of a 1962 trial that stuck. The Cleveland Browns wear no logo at all, just plain orange. Fan cultures are just as distinct: Buffalo tailgaters smash through folding tables in the snow, Seattle crowds have set world records for noise, and the Detroit Lions have hosted a Thanksgiving game nearly every year since 1934, the reason the holiday and football are inseparable.

Success is spread unevenly. The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers have six Super Bowl titles each; the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have five. At the other end, the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions have never reached a Super Bowl at all, and the Lions had not won a single playoff game between the 1991 and 2023 seasons.
