About Australian National Symbols

This quiz is about Australia's national symbols and nothing else: the flag and the flags of the First Peoples, the coat of arms with its kangaroo and emu, the national anthem and the unofficial one, the national colours, the floral and faunal emblems, the animals on the coins, the Southern Cross, and the landmarks and everyday things that stand for the country. Sixty questions in three packs of twenty.

Every question is written the way people search: how many points has the Commonwealth Star, who wrote Advance Australia Fair, which two animals hold up the coat of arms, why the kangaroo and emu were chosen, which town is the opal capital. The answer is one of four choices of the same kind, and the question never contains it. A short note after each answer gives the background: when a symbol was adopted, who made it, what it means, and how it is used today.

The first pack covers the flag: the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross, the 1901 competition and the Flags Act, the Red Ensign, the Australian Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag, and the coat of arms and its supporters, shield and wattle. The second pack covers the anthem, its writer and its rivals Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia, the 2021 lyric change, the national colours, the golden wattle and Wattle Day, and the opal. The third pack covers Coober Pedy, the animals on the coins, the Southern Cross and the Eureka Flag, the Australian Made kangaroo, the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Uluru, the didgeridoo, the slouch hat, the wattle sprig, the boxing kangaroo, and the state floral emblems.

About a fifth of the questions carry a photograph of the symbol named in the question, chosen so that it does not give the answer away. Every fact has been checked.
