About US Landmarks

The United States is young by the standards of most nations, but it has spent two and a half centuries turning buildings, bridges, statues and stretches of rock into shorthand for ideas. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France, shipped across the Atlantic in 350 pieces and reassembled on a former military island, and within a generation it had stopped being a diplomatic gesture and become the first thing millions of immigrants saw of their new country. Mount Rushmore was carved with dynamite and pneumatic drills over fourteen years, and was never actually finished to its original design. The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is a weighted catenary curve exactly as tall as it is wide, and the last section was fitted on a hot morning only after fire crews sprayed the south leg with water to shrink the steel enough to close the gap.

This quiz moves across the whole country and the whole timeline. There are colonial sites where the founding documents were argued into existence: Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Faneuil Hall in Boston, the Liberty Bell with its famous crack. Not every landmark here was built on purpose. The Hollywood Sign began as an advertisement for a housing development called Hollywoodland and was meant to come down after eighteen months. Some are natural: Devils Tower in Wyoming, which became the first national monument in 1906; Delicate Arch in Utah, now the outline on the state's licence plates; the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde, abandoned by the Ancestral Puebloans around 1300 and left almost untouched for six hundred years.
