About US National Parks

The United States has more than sixty national parks. They are big pieces of land that the government looks after so that the forests, mountains, deserts, rivers, animals and old sites inside them stay safe for everyone to visit and enjoy.

Yellowstone, in the state of Wyoming, was the very first national park in the world. It was set aside in 1872 and is famous for its hot springs and for geysers that shoot hot water high into the air. Since then, parks have been created all across the country: the deep, colourful Grand Canyon in Arizona; the tall granite cliffs and waterfalls of Yosemite in California; the swampy Everglades in Florida where alligators live; and the snowy peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

The people who work in the parks are called park rangers. They wear a uniform and a wide, flat hat. Rangers lead walks, answer questions, help visitors who are lost or hurt, and protect the plants and animals. When you visit a park, the most important rule is "Leave No Trace" -- take all your rubbish home, stay on the trails, and leave rocks, plants and flowers where you found them so the next family can enjoy them too.
