About Gandhian Era: Non-Cooperation to Civil Disobedience

This quiz is meant for students preparing for the IAS examination and other competitive tests, and for anyone who wants to understand the Gandhian phase of the Indian freedom struggle. It begins with Gandhi's formative years in South Africa, where he developed the method of Satyagraha, and his return to India in 1915 and early campaigns at Champaran, Kheda and Ahmedabad. It covers the Rowlatt Act, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, and the Khilafat Movement that together led to the launch of the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920, its spread and its withdrawal after the violence at Chauri Chaura. It then traces the years of the Swaraj Party, the Simon Commission, the Nehru Report and the Lahore session of 1929, before covering the Civil Disobedience Movement in full: the Dandi March and Salt Satyagraha, the Gandhi-Irwin Pact, the Round Table Conferences, the Poona Pact, and the movement's eventual withdrawal in 1934. Alongside this it covers the parallel revolutionary movement of Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and Surya Sen, the early anti-untouchability satyagrahas of Ambedkar and Periyar, and the constitutional outcome in the Government of India Act of 1935. A final section covers Gandhi's own ideas and institutions, and the historiography of the freedom movement. When complete it will have one hundred and twenty carefully checked questions, arranged in five packs of twenty-four.
