About Indus Valley Civilisation & Vedic Period

Long before written history properly begins in India, two very different worlds shaped the land. The first was the Indus Valley Civilisation, one of the world's earliest urban civilisations, spread across a vast area of the north-west. Its planned cities, standard weights, and still-undeciphered script reveal a society that valued order and trade above almost everything else.

This quiz covers the Indus Valley story from its very beginning. It looks at how the civilisation was actually discovered, first at Harappa and then at Mohenjo-daro, in the early 1920s. It covers the three broad phases historians use to describe its rise and fall, the Early, Mature, and Late Harappan phases, and the huge area the civilisation actually covered, from Manda in the north to Daimabad in the south.

It also explores the civilisation's famous cities in real depth. Mohenjo-daro's Great Bath and granary, Lothal's dockyard, Dholavira's water reservoirs, and Kalibangan's ploughed field each get their own detailed coverage. So do the civilisation's seals, its bronze and stone sculptures, its trade with Mesopotamia, and the leading theories for why it eventually declined.

The second world this quiz covers is the Vedic Period that followed.
