India recorded its highest-ever position in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index, climbing to 94th place out of 167 countries in the Sustainable Development Report 2026, published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). The report was released at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, held in Hamburg, Germany, on 29-30 June 2026, and gave India an overall SDG score of 68.3 out of 100.

India's climb to 94th place represents a rise of 18 places since 2015, when the Sustainable Development Goals were first adopted and India ranked 112th, making it one of the fastest-improving major economies in the world alongside China. Despite this progress, India continues to rank behind four of its South Asian neighbours, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, and Nordic countries continue to dominate the top of the index, with Finland in first place, followed closely by Sweden and Denmark.

The report cautions that India remains off track to achieve most of its 2030 targets: only 33.3% of India's SDG targets are expected to be achieved by 2030, while 42.7% are progressing slowly and 24% have actually deteriorated. Hunger, child malnutrition, health, climate, and governance-related challenges remain particularly persistent, with the report flagging challenges across 13 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals overall.
